Extension Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostic Specialist, Jen Olson, gives us an update on the Rose Rosette Disease trials to see if your average everyday rose is susceptible, tolerant, or resistant to Rose Rosette, which is a virus that can be transmitted by a mite. Extension Vegetable Specialist, Lynn Brandenberger, is giving us a tour of some research on cabbage. Lynda Carrier who is the Senior Research Specialist, is giving us a tour on the sweet corn trials at the Cimarron Valley Research Station. Next we talk with Becky Carroll, a Fruit and Pecan Extension Assistant, who is doing research on some blackberries. We see see what Extension Food Specialist, Barbara Brown, is mixing up for us in the kitchen.

Then it's out into the lawn where we show steps to successfully re-seed an area and how to lay sod on a bare patch on top of a slop. And Extension Specialist, Shelley Mitchell, shows us another great outdoor activity for children by creating art from soil and other yard debris.

In this episode of Oklahoma Gardening, Host Casey Hentges does some spring cleaning and revives our houseplants and potted 'Sansevieria' Snake Plant tropicals. We have a visit from last November, 2019 with Leon Sloan in Kingston, OK to find out how to create one of his famous wicking buckets from recycled materials to help reduce trash found in our oceans. Urban & Community Forestry Coordinator, Mark Bays, has some useful tips on how to prune our trees. We go over the 3-Cut Technique and the Tree Pruning Checklist: make sure to remove the dead material first, then the crossing branches before trying to open up the center of the tree. Remember, it is best to only cut about 20% -- 25% when pruning trees. And OSU Extension Pesticide Coordinator, Kevin Shelton, identifies some household hazards to help stay safer at home. Did you know, that if your cleaning/disinfectant product has an EPA registration number that it is actually a pesticide? Remember, to NEVER mix your cleaning products nor your herbicide, pesticide, or insecticide products.

Today on Oklahoma Gardening Host Casey Hentges shows us a kaleidoscope of colorful Coleus to add interest in your garden. OSU Vegetable and Food Crop Specialist, Lynn Brandenberger, shows how he is using a 'crimper' on his living mulch in his high tunnel raised beds to reduce the amount of weeding, heat up-take, and conserving moisture in his garden. OSU Plant Disease Diagnostician, Jen Olson, removes cankers from a cherry tree. Cankers are a plant disease caused by various species of fungi and bacteria and can cause more problems in the future for your tree. We check in on our bermudagrass eradication study in Cimarron Valley Research Station in Perkins. We look at one of our test plots to see how tilling and over seeding haygrazer (Sorghum Sudangrass) as a cover crop have an affect against bermudagrass. And OSU Extension Pecan and Grape Specialist, Becky Carroll, is in the orchard to thin the fruit off our peach trees to ensure of big juicy peaches in the future.

In this episode of Oklahoma Gardening, Host Casey Hentges direct sows squash, Black Beauty Zucchini, moonflowers, and cucumbers in a raised bed. OSU Extension Fruit and Vegetable Crop Specialist, Lynn Brandenberger, has tips for when to plant your summer vegetables. OSU Extension Pecan, Grape, and Fruit Specialist, Becky Carroll, is in the orchard to monitor the infamous insect plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar, in our peaches. In Oklahoma, this weevil is one of the most important insects attacking fruit. In particular, it is extremely detrimental where stone fruits (such as peaches, plums, and apricots) are interplanted with pome fruits (such as apples and pears). We get a little more life out of an old leaky hose. Casey shows us one way to fix a cracked and damaged hose in our garden. And OSU Extension Food Specialist, Barbara Brown, has a special guest, Jake Nelson, a Meat Processing Specialist, to help us get the most from our poultry dollars. Jake shows us how to cut a whole chicken into the parts we are familiar seeing in our grocery stores.

And Extension Food Nutritionist, Barbara Brown, makes Green Bean and Ground Beef Stew.

Today on Oklahoma Gardening Host Casey Hentges is out in the garden scratching trunks and stems to see what has overwintered. We plant a spicy salsa garden in a container. We manage to get a tomato plant, a pepper plant, some cilantro, and onion chives all in one container! OSU Turfgrass Specialist, Dennis Martin, looks at two different shade grasses in the NTEP 2017 - 2021 Trail. Kentucky Bluegrass vs Tall Fescue. We see how summer patch disease and crabgrass affect these shade grasses and when we should overseed to help combat these effects. Casey has a fun plant for everyone to enjoy out in the water garden. It's a bog plant called Neptunia aquatica, Sensitive Plant and it closes its leaves when touched! And Payne County Extension Horticulturist, Keith Reed, has tips on protecting against late frosts by using materials you might have on hand to fit your gardening needs. Here Keith shows us how he uses old pane glass windows as a greenhouse.
