A hidden gem in the Oklahoma City Parks surfaces, Crystal Lake. Community and state officials visit with Casey to discuss their interaction with Edgemere Park in OKC.

We take a look at a new irrigation system that uses computer control and wireless connectivity allows you to use your phone to create a custom irrigation pattern that needs fewer sprinkler heads and allows for greater control.

OSU Extension Vegetable Specialist Lynn Brandenberger helps to interpret horticultural chemical labels. At an abandoned homestead Casey finds landscape plants that have weathered the elements alone for decades. We begin what will be a series of segments over the coming season of the process of producing wildflower seeds at Johnston Seed Company in Enid. Barbara Brown prepares a sweet potato soup.

Payne County Extension Horticulture Educator Keith Reed takes us through the process of properly calibrating a tank sprayer. Karsten Creek golf course has been preparing for the NCAA golf championships that will be broadcast around the world, and we got to take a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to get a golf course ready for such a large event. OSU Extension Entomologist Eric Rebek joins Host Casey Hentges to examine some pests on our squash plants. Casey is in the vegetable garden to hill the potatoes.

Extension Food Specialist Barbara Brown has the ins and outs of selecting and using an air fryer and uses one to cook asparagus.

Extension Food Specialist Barbara Brown prepares a salad with raspberries to cool down a meal in the hot summer.

Host Casey Hentges visits the vegetable garden at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma and speaks with the club’s horticulturalist and chef about how they are growing food for truly locally grown menu items. We get an update on a roadside monarch research project that OSU is working on with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to provide a habitat for monarchs and other pollinators while saving tax dollars by roadside reducing mowing costs. OSU Consumer Horticulture Specialist David Hillock visits with a watermelon producer in Atoka, Oklahoma.

Tulsa County Extension Horticulture Educator Kenda Woodburn has tips on entering horticultural products in your county fair. In Okarche, Kingfisher County Extension 4-H Educator Laine Martin visits with 4-H member Grace Krittenbrink about her experiences in 4-H and a beautification project in her home town. 4-H member Grace Krittenbrink shows how to prepare a tasty homemade salsa.

In Mustang, Oklahoma a group of spirited Master Gardeners, The Wildhorse Gardeners, tell us about their educational activities and give us a tour of their community garden they have built with the help of the City of Mustang. Extension Food Specialist Barbara Brown cooks spinach and mushrooms.

Rogers County Extension Horticulturalist John Haase introduces us to Rogers County and Master Gardener activities in the county. A couple of young gardeners join us for a fun activity with seeds. Rogers County Master Gardener Carolyn Peterson gives us on a tour of her woodland garden, complete with a characterful babbling brook. Prairie gardening doesn’t need to be difficult. Rogers County Master Gardener Jennifer Podowski has created a beautiful wildflower meadow by letting nature do the work.

John Stevens, a horticulturalist with OSU Landscape Services, takes us on a tour of the Willham House, the home of the president of Oklahoma State University. In Tulsa, Oklahoma we find out how Southern Hills Country Club utilizes drone technology to monitor the health of their golf course. We find out the differences between London Plane trees and Sycamores at the Greenleaf Nursery Company’s Lost Lake facility. Barbara Brown cooks a caprese pasta salad.

Host Casey Hentges highlights the Snow on the Mountain Euphorbia, a native annual that is popping up across fields and gardens around Oklahoma right now. In Pawhuska, Extension Horticulture Educator Kenda Woodburn and Extension Assistant Blayr Gourley takes us on a tour of a pocket park that has jumpstarted a downtown beautification. We stop in at the Osage Senior Housing complex greenhouse in Pawhuska. Kenda visits with an Osage County Master Gardener who is managing a growing nursery that is providing many of the plants beautifying the Pawhuska area. In Tulsa, we visit the Challenger 7 Park Community Garden and Food Forest. Extension Food Specialist Barbara Brown prepares a summer salad of tomatoes, peaches and corn.

This week we begin our regional tour of gardening in northwest Oklahoma. Over the next several weeks we will be bringing you the gardens, gardeners, and the ecology of this unique part of our state. At the Beaver River Wildlife Management Area we explore the diversity of plants and soils that are found at the beginnings of the short grass prairie. In Alva, Oklahoma we visit a beautiful home garden filled with tough plants, unique spaces, and fun crafted items. To combat the drying winds the Hutchison Family Farm uses drip irrigation and plasticulture near Felt, Oklahoma to grow vegetables to sell at farmers markets in three states.

Host Casey Hentges identifies a soft textured plant filled with bright red blooms that has become a volunteer ground cover in our orchard. In the grass garden we have an ornamental grass to provide a delicate highlight gently dancing in a summer breeze. Extension Food Specialist Barbara Brown prepares a refreshing grape dessert salad. We continue our tour of gardening in northwest Oklahoma. In Alva, Oklahoma we visit an oasis on a windy hill. Also in Alva, we visit a home that has utilized a small lot for maximum gardening, including a sunken garden that you just want to dive into. We visit with Woods County Extension Educator Greg Highfill about the recent wildfires in northwest Oklahoma and look at how the plant life has responded.

John Stephens, an OSU-Stillwater Horticulturalist, joins Host Casey Hentges to build a succulent planter from a wine bottle. Extension Food Specialist Barbara Brown quenches our thirst with a blueberry green tea. We continue our tour of gardening in northwest Oklahoma. We stop at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Area near Cherokee, Oklahoma to visit with Steve Alspach, a soil scientist with the USDA-NRCS. He tells us about the soils in that part of the state and explains how such a large salt-encrusted area came to be in Oklahoma. We enjoy a secluded shady garden in Guymon that is made for entertaining. Also in Guymon, we visit Helms Nursery, a family owned business that specializes in growing beautiful plants made for the rigors of northwest landscapes.

We get a special sneak peek of the Oklahoma Horticultural Society’s Garden Tour for Connoisseurs in Oklahoma City. The Warriner home features a modernist home with a xeriscaped front landscape and a back yard surrounded by a living fence of bamboo. The Burkhart home is a Mediterranean villa with an inviting water feature and colorful plantings just off the fairway. At the Clay home we step past the picket fence and into a shady garden with an eloquent color palette and lush textures.

OSU Associate Extension Specialist Shelley Mitchell has a fun children’s activity to see the different colors that are present in green leaves before they are revealed by fall. We continue our tour of gardening in northwest Oklahoma. In Enid, we stop in at the Garfield County OSU Extension Center for a tour of their master gardener demonstration garden. Also in Enid, we find out how the wildflowers that we saw earlier in the season are harvested and processed by the Johnston Seed Company.

Host Casey Hentges digs in our hügelkultur (mound garden) we built two seasons ago to check out what has happened to the trees we buried to create our mound. We identify some poisonous plants for pets in our garden and visit with Dr. Lara Sypniewski, Professor, OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, about how to keep pets safe and what to do if we think they have ingested a poisonous plant. Several students from universities and colleges around Oklahoma participated in an undergraduate research and extension program at OSU – Stillwater last summer. We find out more about the program and check out the interesting projects they worked on.

Host Casey Hentges has some chores for us in the garden this winter. Mark Bays, an Urban and Community Forester with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry, explains how the City of Oklahoma City is looking at making trees available for local mills and artisans that were removed because they were unwanted or storm damaged. At Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, OK we go behind the scenes with Golf Course Superintendent Russ Myers to look at how they are incorporating some new technology in a historic renovation to their championship course. Barbara Brown cooks a frittata that is sure to be a big holiday treat with your family. We wrap up this gardening season and plant some seeds about what will be coming up in the our garden next year.

This week we revisit segments from the gardening season showcasing some of our favorite out-of-the-ordinary planting containers. Host Casey Hentges renovates our keyhole garden to get it ready for another growing season. OSU-Stillwater Horticulturalist John Stephens shows us how to create a decorative planter for succulents out of a wine bottle. At Pond Pro Shop in Shawnee we check out a small sand hydroponic system. With the help of OSU Horticulture and Landscape Architecture students we create a do-it-yourself watering system for a grouping of pots in our Concepts Garden. We build a raised bed out of cinderblocks and get it ready for planting.

Near Claremore, Oklahoma Rogers County Extension Horticulture Educator John Haase visits with a Master Gardener about how she has created a native prairie filled with a plethora of native plants. We hike the area around the Black Mesa in far northwest Oklahoma to explore the rich diversity and beauty of the plants in this unique part of the state. Casey finds tremendous beauty that has flourished after being left behind at an abandoned homestead.
